‘The Piggery’ Restoration and Conversion

Sockburn Hall, Darlington, County Durham

The Piggery

We were commissioned to convert and restore the former piggery within the grounds of Sockburn Hall, delivering a sympathetic restoration that respects the building’s historic character while providing contemporary comfort and performance.

Our brief required a conservation-led design strategy that retained original features where possible. Traditional materials and techniques were used throughout: expert stonemasons were engaged to repair and repoint the external walls in matching lime mortar, and salvaged stone and brickwork was carefully repaired and re-set to preserve the piggery’s unique personality. Internally, we adapted the plan to form flexible spaces suitable for occupation, while minimising intrusive intervention to the historic structure.

Throughout the design process we maintained continuous liaison with conservation specialists, securing approvals for interventions and ensuring that each repair and alteration met best-practice historic building conservation principles. The result is a sympathetically restored building that preserves the character of the piggery, supports contemporary use, and celebrates traditional craftsmanship.
