Barn Conversion

barn conversion, aislaby

Set on the tranquil banks of the River Tees, this barn conversion transforms a traditional agricultural shell into a contemporary, industrial-inspired residence. Retaining the building’s original scale and simple form, the design introduces crisp, modern interventions that respect the rural context while delivering a distinctly contemporary home.

Our proposal uses a restrained palette of natural timber, exposed steel and engineered concrete which creates an industrial yet rural feel. High-performance glazing and discreet insulation ensure comfort and efficiency without altering character.

Interior Open-plan spaces use the barn’s volume; exposed trusses and structure are features. Robust finishes—raw timber floors, metal stairs, concrete—provide a contemporary, flexible family backdrop. Connection to site Large glazed panels and sliding doors open to riverside terraces and lawns, prioritising sightlines to the river and farmland for a calm relationship with the landscape.
