‘The Stables’ and ‘Farm Cottage’

Ingleby Greenhow, North Yorkshire

The Stables

The project comprises a conversion and a complementary new build set within a rural conservation area. Our proposal included the conversion of the existing stables as a single-storey barn dwelling and provided Farm Cottage as a new two-storey detached dwelling. Both buildings use traditional materials and detailing to respond to local character and to respect the site's constraints and setting.

Our key design principles on this project were maintaining rural character and materials, ensuring low visual impact, and a conservation-led approach. We proposed to retain and repair the historic fabric of the stables while a new extension and link were clearly subordinate and legible as contemporary interventions.

The ‘Farm Cottage’ as a new-build dwelling, was a sympathetic addition to the site with considered building massing, appropriate ridge heights and material treatments. The new dwelling sits discreetly within the landscape and the wider conservation area, preserving existing views and boundaries.

Both dwellings provide light, flexible contemporary living while delivering modern spatial standards and high performance.
